Autism Testing for Children and Adults

Some individuals experience differences in how they communicate, interact socially, process sensory information, or engage with interests and routines. While these differences can be part of normal human variation, when they begin to create challenges in daily life, relationships, school, or work, it may be helpful to seek a clearer understanding of those experiences.

Although autism is often identified during early childhood, many adolescents and adults pursue evaluations later in life after recognizing lifelong patterns related to communication, social interaction, sensory experiences, or highly focused interests. For some individuals, receiving an autism evaluation can provide clarity, validation, and a better understanding of their personal experiences.

    Common Characteristics of Autism…

    Social/Communication Differences
    – Difficulty interpreting social cues such as facial expressions or tone of voice
    – Challenges initiating or maintaining conversations
    – Preference for structured or predictable social interactions
    – Uncertainty about social expectations or unwritten social rules
    – Differences in nonverbal communication such as eye contact or gestures

    Restricted Interests and Repetitive Patterns
    – Strong or highly focused interests in specific topics
    – Preference for routines or predictable environments
    – Repetitive movements or behaviors
    – Difficulty with unexpected changes in routine
    – Increased sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, or smells

These characteristics may appear differently in each individual, and not every person will experience the same patterns.

What Does an Autism Evaluation Assess?

Autism evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults provide a comprehensive understanding of social communication, behavior, and overall functioning across settings. Areas assessed may include:

    – Social communication and social interaction skills
    – Verbal and nonverbal communication
    – Restricted or repetitive behaviors, interests, and routines
    – Sensory sensitivities and sensory processing differences
    – Emotional and behavioral functioning
    – Attention, executive functioning, and adaptive daily living skills
    – Developmental, educational, and mental health history
    – Symptoms of related conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, or learning difficulties

This comprehensive approach allows us to identify both strengths and areas of need, clarify diagnostic questions, and provide meaningful, actionable recommendations for home, school, work, and daily life.

What Does an Autism Evaluation Include?

    – A detailed clinical and developmental interview
    – Standardized autism-specific assessment measures
    – Cognitive or psychological testing when appropriate
    – Behavioral observations
    – Rating scales or questionnaires from the individual and/or caregivers
    – Review of educational or medical records when available

All information is integrated to provide a thorough and individualized understanding of functioning and developmental history.

    After the Evaluation…

Clients receive a comprehensive written report that includes:

    – A summary of findings
    – Diagnostic impressions when appropriate
    – Individualized recommendations for school, work, and daily life supports

A feedback session is also provided to review results, answer questions, and discuss next steps. For many individuals and families, this process provides clarity, validation, and guidance moving forward.
