ADHD Testing for Children and Adults

Some individuals experience ongoing challenges with concentration, focusing, and remembering important details. Others may find it difficult to inhibit spontaneous responses, including everything from movement to speech to acting quickly without thinking. While it is normal to experience these difficulties from time to time, when these patterns begin to interfere with communication, school or work performance, or activities of daily living, it may be helpful to seek additional support.

A comprehensive ADHD evaluation can help clarify whether these challenges are consistent with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or related attention and executive functioning difficulties. An evaluation can provide valuable insight into an individual’s cognitive and behavioral patterns and help guide the development of appropriate, individualized approaches to support and treatment.

While ADHD is commonly diagnosed during childhood, many adults discover later in life that they have been experiencing symptoms for many years without receiving a formal diagnosis. ADHD can present differently across the lifespan. The ways in which ADHD appears in children may differ from how it presents in adolescents or adults.

    Common Characteristics of ADHD…

ADHD is generally associated with three primary characteristics:

    Inattention
    – Difficulty sustaining focus on tasks or conversations
    – Frequently losing items or forgetting details
    – Difficulty organizing tasks or managing time
    – Becoming easily distracted
    – Difficulty completing tasks or following instructions

    Hyperactivity
    – Restlessness or difficulty remaining still
    – Excessive movement or fidgeting
    – Difficulty engaging in quiet activities
    – Internal sense of restlessness (especially in adults)

    Impulsivity
    – Speaking or responding before thinking
    – Difficulty waiting or taking turns
    – Interrupting others
    – Acting without considering consequences

Not every individual experiences all three characteristics, and symptoms may present differently from person to person.

    What Do ADHD Evaluations Assess?

ADHD evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults provide a comprehensive understanding of attention, self-regulation, and executive functioning across settings. Areas assessed may include:

    – Attention, concentration, and distractibility
    – Executive functioning skills (organization, planning, time management, impulse control)
    – Hyperactivity and impulsivity
    – Emotional and behavioral regulation
    – Academic, occupational, and daily functioning
    – Developmental, educational, and mental health history
    – Symptoms of related conditions such as anxiety, depression, or learning difficulties

This comprehensive approach allows us to identify both strengths and areas of need, clarify diagnostic questions, and provide meaningful, actionable recommendations for home, school, work, and daily life.

What Does an ADHD Evaluation Include?

A comprehensive evaluation at SBPS may include:

    – A detailed clinical and developmental interview
    – Standardized cognitive and psychological testing
    – Academic assessment when appropriate
    – Behavioral rating scales or questionnaires
    – Review of relevant records when available

All information is integrated into a clear, comprehensive report that supports documentation and decision-making.

    After the Evaluation…

Clients and/or their families receive a detailed written report that includes:

    – A summary of findings
    – Diagnostic impressions when appropriate
    – Documentation for schools, workplaces, or other institutions
    – Individualized recommendations for accommodations and support

A feedback session is also provided to review results, answer questions, and discuss next steps.
